C. Eric Lincoln was a professor emeritus of religion and culture at Duke University and the author/editor of over 20 books.  His best known works are The Black Muslims In America, The Black Church in the African-American Experience, and a novel The Avenue, Clayton City, which won the Lillian Smith Award for Best Southern Fiction.
